The Art of Display
… at the heart of a Tokyo Flea Market
After only a couple hours off the plane from Sydney I found myself wandering around one of Tokyo’s popular Sunday Flea Markets at the International Forum. It was the perfect place to get acquainted with some of the underlying cultural aspects of everyday life in Japan and a fascinating study into Japanese aesthetics.
Unlike western flea markets I have been to the Japanese have a very mindful approach in the way their wares are ordered and laid out. The meticulous, well-mannered and respectful approach to display provided a soothing shopping experience which was a great way to spend a couple of hours.
The market was filled with stylish looking stall holders selling a mixture of stuff from amazing antiques from local, European and Asia origins, second hand clothing and quirky hand-made knickknacks.
